Back to the 4AM starts once again, and meeting Faith and Pam for pre-dawn ride to the airport. We loaded our 5 bags, piling into the van behind them. As always the check-in and security lines were epic, so we opted to delve into the experienced traveler bag of tricks to make sure we made our flight. Unfortunately, this required a great deal of walking for them and limping for me. A pretty badly sprained ankle was my reward for a rather poorly timed sporting venture a few days prior. After all that pain and perspiration, Delta Airlines was in usual form and we found our packed plane turning back around for the terminal due to a mechanical issue. An hour later we were again on our way, (it turned out to be a stuck indicator light, or at least that’s what we were told) although planning our sprint/hobble to the connecting flight in Atlanta. Joy!
In ATL we arrived at the gate a little sweaty and boarded immediately, with the cabin door closing behind us. Once on the ground in Raleigh, we discovered that 1 of the 5 bags didn’t actually make it onto the plane in San Diego. Remember what I said about Delta being in usual form? Believe it or not, I have yet to have 1 flight on Delta this year where nothing went wrong; be it lost bags (3 times), mechanical problems (3 times), a connecting flight that left early - stranding a dozen passengers (once), stuck on the tarmac in ATL (twice), and one flight just completely cancelled without warning. All of this, and I don’t even fly Delta that much! <sigh>
