Set Up – Thursday March 29
Greeted by the familiar smiling faces at Alabama Blue Water Adventures, the DUI and ABWA Crew began setting up the event tents on what was reported to be the hottest day of the year so far, in Pelham, AL. Tents went up very quickly, and the shade provided some welcome relief from the sun, while we turned suits, waxed drysuit zippers and prepared for a busy weekend.
PSD Workshop – Friday March 30
The PSD Workshop was well attended, with teams from the local area, and as far away as Baton Rouge, LA. As usual, several teams used the day for team training and networking with other area units, while some used the entire weekend to train and expand their capabilities. We were positively spoiled by our hosts at ABWA, using their large meeting room with full audio and video capabilities, as well as a complete coffee bar, a la Starbucks.
A BBQ lunch was followed by an afternoon of test diving the entire line of DUI drysuits. The usual PSD compliment of full face masks and comm units got a workout. While this type of diving is quite serious and often overlooked (until needed) it struck me that when divers are truly comfortable in the water with the myriad of required equipment, not only are safe, but also dramatically more mission capable. When involved in training, as skills become second nature, there is often room for some light-hearted humor, and we certainly had plenty of that today.
